About The Nautical Nerds

The Nautical Nerds Inc. is an Australian not-for-profit organisation focused on practical marine conservation and restoration.

We were created by a group of people who share a strong connection to the ocean and wanted to do more than simply talk about the environmental challenges facing our marine ecosystems. Our aim is to support practical, science-informed projects that can deliver meaningful and measurable benefits for the marine environment.

Our mission is to help restore and protect Australia’s marine environments through practical restoration projects, collaboration, education and community support.

A major focus of our work is oyster reef restoration and the important role healthy oyster reefs can play in improving marine habitat, supporting biodiversity and contributing to healthier coastal ecosystems.

The Nautical Nerds is based in Queensland, Australia, with a strong focus on marine and coastal environments associated with the Great Barrier Reef region and surrounding waterways.

As the organisation grows, we hope to support restoration projects and partnerships across a broader range of suitable locations.

Yes. The Nautical Nerds Inc. is an incorporated not-for-profit organisation.

We have also been endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient, commonly known as DGR status, which means eligible donations of $2 or more may be tax deductible in Australia.

Donors should retain their donation receipt and seek their own tax advice where required.

Our Restoration Work

Oyster reef restoration involves rebuilding or restoring oyster reef habitat in areas where natural oyster reefs have been lost, damaged or significantly reduced.

Historically, oyster reefs were an important part of many Australian coastal ecosystems. Restoration projects aim to create suitable habitat where oysters and other marine organisms can establish and develop functioning reef communities over time.

Healthy oyster reefs can provide a range of environmental benefits.

They create complex habitat for fish and other marine life, support biodiversity, help stabilise parts of the seafloor and can contribute to improved water quality as oysters naturally filter water while feeding.

Restoring these habitats can help strengthen the overall health and resilience of coastal ecosystems.

Not like there once were.

Historically, dense oyster reefs covered large areas of Australia’s coastline, including the river mouths of Far North Queensland. These reefs had existed for thousands of years, filtering coastal waters and providing habitat for fish and other marine life.

From the late 1800s into the early 1900s, however, industrial dredging and large-scale shell harvesting removed enormous quantities of oysters and reef material. Across Australia, research estimates that around 90–99% of native shellfish reef habitat has been lost.

In northern Queensland, the loss was particularly severe. Historical Blacklip Rock Oyster reefs were almost completely removed, and more than a century later, functioning reefs have largely failed to naturally return.

That is why restoration is needed. It isn’t about creating something new, it is about rebuilding an ecosystem that was once a natural part of these waters.

The Nautical Nerds is working through the planning, consultation, scientific and regulatory processes required for future restoration projects.

Marine restoration projects require careful site selection, appropriate approvals and permits, scientific input and collaboration with relevant authorities and stakeholders.

We believe it is important to get this process right rather than rush into placing structures in the marine environment before the necessary work has been completed.

Updates on project locations, approvals and restoration activities will be published on our website as they become available.

Potential restoration sites are considered using a range of factors, which may include historical oyster reef presence, water conditions, environmental suitability, marine habitat, access, potential ecological benefits and regulatory requirements.

Site selection may also involve consultation with scientists, government agencies, Traditional Owners, local communities and other relevant stakeholders.

Not every location will be suitable for oyster reef restoration, which is why careful assessment is an important part of the process.

Restoration is not simply about placing material in the water and walking away.

Where appropriate, projects may be monitored using measures such as oyster recruitment and survival, reef development, marine biodiversity, fish activity, water conditions and other ecological indicators.

The exact monitoring program will depend on the location, project design and scientific requirements.

Our goal is to support projects where progress can be measured and the results can contribute to a better understanding of marine restoration.

Collaboration is an important part of our approach.

Marine restoration projects can involve scientists, universities, government agencies, environmental organisations, Traditional Owners, local communities, businesses and other specialists.

We want our projects to be informed by the best available science and by people with relevant local knowledge and experience.

Donations and Support

Donations directly support the charitable work of The Nautical Nerds and are used to help deliver our projects and programs. This includes equipment, project planning, scientific assessments, restoration materials, monitoring, research, education, community engagement and the operational costs necessary to carry out this work effectively.

As individual restoration projects develop, we will provide supporters with clear information about the projects being undertaken, the work being delivered and how donations are helping make that work possible.

The Nautical Nerds Inc. has Deductible Gift Recipient status.

Generally, donations of $2 or more may be tax deductible in Australia when they meet the requirements for a tax-deductible gift.

A receipt will be provided for eligible donations. Individual circumstances can vary, so donors should seek professional tax advice if they are unsure about their eligibility to claim a deduction.

Yes.

We welcome conversations with businesses interested in supporting practical marine conservation and restoration.

Support may include financial contributions, corporate partnerships, sponsorship, equipment, professional services, materials, technical expertise or other forms of in-kind assistance.

Businesses interested in working with us can visit our Corporate Partnerships page or contact us directly.

Potentially, yes.

Marine restoration projects can require a wide range of materials, equipment, transport, technical expertise and professional services.

If you or your business would like to offer goods or services, please contact us with some information about what you may be able to provide.

Not every offer will necessarily be suitable for a particular project, but we are always interested in discussing ways people and businesses can contribute.

Getting Involved

We welcome interest from people who would like to support our work.

Volunteer opportunities will depend on the stage and requirements of our projects. Some opportunities may involve restoration activities, while others may include events, administration, education, photography, communications, fundraising or professional support.

You do not necessarily need a scientific or marine background to contribute.

Visit our Get Involved page for current opportunities and updates.

No.

While some parts of our work require qualified scientists, marine specialists or other professionals, there are many ways people can contribute.

Skills in areas such as communications, photography, fundraising, events, business, education, administration, construction, boating, logistics and community engagement may all be valuable at different stages of our work.

We hope to create opportunities for schools, community organisations and other groups to learn more about marine ecosystems, oyster reefs and restoration.

The type of involvement available will depend on the location, safety requirements and stage of individual projects.

Educational resources and future community opportunities will be published on our website as they become available.

The best way to follow our progress is through The Nautical Nerds website and our official social media channels.

We will share updates about restoration projects, research, partnerships, volunteering opportunities, marine science and other developments as our work progresses.
